GEDCOM to TreePad converision utility

GED2TPD^™ is a Freeware utility to convert GEDCOM genealogical data into a TreePad tree. It will also generate tab-delimited XLS files for loading into Microsoft Excel, Access or other database tool.

Execution

GED2TPD is now a Windows program! After installing, run it like any other program from the Start/Programs menu.

Options

`Starting Individual`	This option allows the specification of a "head of tree". If all (or most) of your tree is descended from one person, it is a good idea to let ged2tpd know that up front. It will make for a lot neater tree structure. If you don't provide one, ged2tpd will pick one for you. For more info on this, see hints below.
`Levels to Display`	Number of levels deep you want your tree to display. For example, If you only want to see the first 5 generations, use `5`. To generate the entire tree, use zero.
`Upper Case Surnames`	Tells ged2tpd to translate surnames to UPPER CASE.
`Tree Only`	Tells ged2tpd that you only want to display individuals that are direct descendents of your starting individual. If this option is omitted, the "1" level of the tree will contain a head of family for each person whose parentage is unknown.
`View Output`	If this option is checked, the output tree file will be opened using TreePad once the conversion is complete. (Note: for this to work, treepad must be associated with the .HJT file extension.)
`Create CSV files`	Indicates that you want to create the optional tab-delimited XLS files. For more info on the XLS files, see hints below.

Usage Notes and Hints

The new Windows version will also display a console behind it so you can track its progress.
GED2TPD works best if you give it a hint as to who the main ancestor in your line is. It's pretty good at finding one on its own, but it is much better if you specify one. And since you know your own data, who better to tell it where to start?
The Individual number you specify must be exactly as it is listed in your GEDCOM file. For example, if your starting person is #1, but your GEDCOM file lists him as I01, you need all 3 characters to make it work. If you make a mistake and give it a number it doesn't recognize, GED2TPD will let you know and select its own.
If you need to break out of the program for any reason, use Ctrl+C in the console window. As noted in the readme, there are certain situations in the data which can cause a loop.
After your HJT file is created, you can open it directly in TreePad. The free viewer will work, and Treepad Lite will allow you to see the group sheet format really well, but the links will look like raw HTML and will be unusable.
The data will look best if you change the default font to 9 point Courier New.

Information on tab-delimited XLS files:

When using the csv option, there are 4 XLS files created plus a directory containing the notes. All XLS Fields are separated by tabs (effective with v2.0 beta 4) The 4 files are:

PERSON.XLS - contains a list of individuals.
The record looks like this:
individual#; first_name; last_name; sex; birth_date; birth_state; birth_city; birth_county; death_date; death_state; death_city; death_county; occupation; burial_place; will_date; will_place; child_of *
* Child_of is a family # representing the parents of this person.
Individual notes are stored in a subdirectory called G2TNOTES and all the note files (plain text) have an extension of .G2T.
FAMILY.XLS - contains a list of families (marriages)
The record looks like this:
family#; husband#; wife#; marriage_date; marriage_state; marriage_city; marriage_county; marriage_note; marriage_source
Note that there are separate Family Notes in the notes directory which contain the family notes and family sources. The notes files may be better to use because of the potential for semicolons in the note text.
PFRELATE.XLS - list of individuals and their family # (a family is defined as a wife and/or children) There can be many entries in this list for one person. If Bob was married 3 times, he will have 3 entries in this list.
The record looks like this: individual number;family number
FCRELATE.XLS - list of family numbers with their associated children. For each family there can be many entries, one for each child.

Semi-colon delimiters in the CSV files were causing problems when there were semi-colons in the text of a GEDCOM note or source.
